"NeverMiss is an iPad-focused app that helps grandparents and grandchildren read the same book together over live video, even when they are miles apart."
NeverMiss is a patent-pending app designed for iPad that lets grandparents and grandchildren read books together in real time — with synchronized page-turning, live video, built-in conversation support, and AI-powered phonics guidance for the adult reader — so that distance never means missing a moment. Built for grandparents, military families, and anyone separated by miles but connected by love.
For years, Diane Haynes did something remarkable every week.
A Fort Lauderdale elementary school teacher by day, she spent her evenings doing what teachers do instinctively — she read with children. Not her students. Her grandchildren. Eight of them, spread across Maryland, Ohio, and western Florida, each one at a different stage of reading, each one waiting for Nana.
They did it over FaceTime. Both families had to buy the same book. The kids held their copies up to the camera. Pages got turned at the wrong time. Younger grandchildren, sometimes, lost their place. Nobody could quite see what Nana was pointing at. It was, by any measure, cumbersome.
But it worked anyway. Because Diane made it work.
She had a formula — her husband Rick noticed it from his recliner, where he had a front row seat to what was happening. She wasn't just reading. She was asking questions that pulled memories out of children. She was teaching phonics without making it feel like a lesson. She was turning a Wednesday night FaceTime call into something that would matter twenty years from now. The grandchildren weren't just getting better at reading — though they were. They were growing up knowing their grandmother. Really knowing her.
Rick watched this for years. He watched Diane build bonds across state lines that might never have formed otherwise. He watched his grandchildren light up when Nana's face appeared on screen. He watched himself lean in from his recliner and add his own two cents, share his own moments, become part of something he hadn't planned on being part of.
And he thought: there has to be a better way to do this.
There wasn't. So he built one.
NeverMiss gives families what Diane and her grandchildren were trying to do with FaceTime and two copies of the same book — but without the friction. Both screens show the same page. Pages turn together, in real time. Nana can point at a word and it lights up on the child's screen. The coaching that Diane did intuitively — the phonics cues, the conversation prompts, the questions that spark connection — is now built into the app, available to every grandparent, whether they have a teaching degree or not.
Because the magic Diane created wasn't really about the books. It was about showing up, week after week, and making children feel known by someone who loves them.
"Reading is the vehicle. Relationship is the destination."
That's the story behind NeverMiss. It started in a livingroom in Fort Lauderdale, watching a teacher grandmother do something extraordinary with nothing but FaceTime and love. It ends — if it ends anywhere — with every family having what the Haynes family had. The technology to close the distance. The tools to make the moments matter. And the memories families can share for years to come.
Founder, NeverMiss
Rick Haynes is the founder of NeverMiss and principal of Spoonbill Investments, Inc., based in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. A grandfather of eight and husband to Diane, a newly retired medical equipment salesman with a love for technology. Rick built NeverMiss after watching Diane conduct years of live reading sessions with their grandchildren over FaceTime — and recognizing that the tools families needed to do this well simply didn't exist.
NeverMiss holds three provisional patents covering synchronized reading technology, AI-powered phonics coaching, and AI-generated adult coaching prompts with access-scoped persistent caching. Rick is available for interviews, speaking engagements, and media appearances.
Co-Inventor, Lead Reading Advisor
Diane Haynes is a Fort Lauderdale elementary school teacher and co-inventor of the NeverMiss phonics coaching system (USPTO App. No. 64/014,326). Over years of weekly FaceTime reading sessions with her eight grandchildren, Diane developed the intuitive coaching framework — rooted in Orton-Gillingham structured literacy — that became the foundation for NeverMiss's built-in guidance system. Her passion for reading, her teaching expertise, and the real progress she watched her grandchildren make along the way are what shaped the NeverMiss formula — one built not just for better readers, but for lasting bonds.

Notes for press
NeverMiss was built so that grandparents, military parents, and families separated by distance can still share the magic of reading together — in real time, on the same page, face to face.
We use books as the bridge — but what we're really building is connection. Every shared story is a memory made, a bond strengthened, a moment that will never be forgotten.
When a child taps a word — or when Nana notices a stumble and taps it herself — NeverMiss identifies the phonics rule and gives the adult reader structured coaching guidance rooted in the Orton-Gillingham framework. No teaching degree required.
Military families, grandparents separated by miles, single parents sharing custody — NeverMiss was designed with real families in mind, inspired by years of the Haynes family reading together across state lines.

Diane Haynes spent years reading to her eight grandchildren over FaceTime, making it work with determination and teaching instinct. Her husband Rick watched from the couch, noticed what she was doing, and built the technology that should have existed all along. A story about love, family, and the invention that came from a living room in Fort Lauderdale.
NeverMiss was designed with military families at its core. A parent deployed abroad can sit down with their child — same page, same book, same moment — as if they were right there.
NeverMiss gives families separated by miles the experience of sitting side by side with a book. Same page, same moment, face to face over live video. This is not a technology story. It is a story about showing up for the people you love.
NeverMiss embeds Orton-Gillingham phonics guidance silently into the reading experience. The adult reader sees structured coaching support. The child sees quality time with someone they love. Co-invented by a Florida reading teacher whose years of family reading sessions inspired the approach.
"I had a front row seat to something I didn't fully understand at first. Diane was doing something remarkable — building real bonds between our grandchildren and their grandparents across three states. I just gave her better tools to do it."

"The goal was never just to finish a chapter. It was to make sure our grandchildren grow up knowing — really knowing — the people who love them most. NeverMiss makes that possible for every family, not just ours."

"Reading together was always about more than the books. The books were just an excuse to show up for each other, week after week. NeverMiss is that excuse — made easier."
